Pholiota astragalina is easy to recognize by the distinctive pinkish orange color of its cap, which is unique among pholiotas and not at all common among other mushrooms. It is relatively small and usually grows singly or in small (2--4 mushrooms) groups or clusters on conifer logs. The cap flesh is orange, turns blackish in age, and is bitter-tasting. It looks very much like a hypholoma, but its brown spore color causes it to be placed in Pholiota.
